Custom Photo Plaques
What is the bas-relief?
The definition of
Bas-relief is a bronze photographic Plaque with shallower photographic relief.
The bas-relief begins
with a photograph, which is replicated in a sand or clay mold. After the mold
is approved, the bronze is cast and then polished by hand and the low relief
bronze is finished. Special finishing chemicals are used to bring out details
and shadows within the cast photograph.
Chemical etching
sometimes referred to as photoengraving, bronze etching or chemical milling is
an ancient process that allows more intricate artwork or photographs to be
transferred to brass, bronze, copper, or stainless steel.
Why choose a bas-relief
for the plaque?
Bas-relief is a type of
relief that has less detail than a photographic relief Plaque, but results in a
permanent, durable, and timeless Plaque that is highly resistant to fading. The
portrait or image is made of solid cast bronze. Bas-reliefs usually leave a
large part of the base material behind the art. The lower depth of the artwork
allows it to be viewed from many different angles without distorting or losing
the perspective of the photographic Plaque. A bas-relief plaque is essentially
a thin sculpture from the original photograph, cast (usually) in bronze.
What is chemical
etching?
No mechanical force or
heat is used during the etching process, resulting in a Plaque that is stronger
than its cast, precision-machined, or etched counterparts. Chemical etching
also produces no waste and is an economically safe way to produce Plaques.
Engraving can also be
done on extremely fine bronzes. Our manufacturer, Gemini, can produce Plaques
up to 1/16 "thick.
